Stone Coat Ultimate Top Coat
Stone Coat Ultimate Top Coat is a high-performance protective coating designed to enhance the durability and longevity of epoxy resin surfaces. Formulated with advanced hybrid coating technology, it provides exceptional resistance to scratches, heat damage and everyday wear, making it ideal for countertops, shower walls, woodworking projects and functional art.
Its distinctive textured finish offers the appearance and feel of natural stone, similar to leathered granite, while providing an additional layer of protection for high-use surfaces. Suitable for both professional and DIY applications, Ultimate Top Coat can be applied over new or existing Stone Coat epoxy surfaces to improve durability and refresh their appearance.
Choose Your Finish
Ultimate Top Coat is available in two textured finishes:
- Textured Matte: A soft, muted finish with minimal light reflection, ideal for achieving a subtle, natural stone-like appearance.
- Textured Gloss: A lightly textured finish with a gentle semi-gloss sheen, offering additional shine while retaining the same high level of surface protection.
Important: Both finishes are textured and will not produce a smooth, glass-like high-gloss surface. Even Textured Gloss will appear closer to a satin or semi-gloss finish when compared with traditional clear epoxy coatings.
If your priority is a smooth, high-gloss finish, consider a final clear coat of Stone Coat Art Coat or Countertop Epoxy instead. If scratch resistance, durability and everyday protection are your priorities, Ultimate Top Coat is the recommended finishing option.
WATER MUST BE ADDED to the mixed Ultimate Top Coat before application. The required water addition differs between Textured Matte and Textured Gloss. Always follow the Ultimate Top Coat Mixing Recipe available under Technical Documents.

Surface Preparation
Proper surface preparation is essential for achieving a consistent finish and ensuring good adhesion.
- Allow to Cure: When applying over freshly poured epoxy, allow the epoxy to cure for at least 24 hours before sanding the surface and edges.
- Sand: Use a random orbital sander to abrade the entire epoxy surface until a uniform matte appearance is achieved. Use 220 grit sandpaper when applying Textured Matte, or 320 grit sandpaper when applying Textured Gloss.
- Clean: Thoroughly remove all sanding dust and wipe the surface with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Allow the surface to dry completely before application.
- Prepare Rollers: Use masking tape to remove loose fibres from the 1/4-inch nap microfibre roller covers before use. Roll each cover across the tape until all loose lint has been removed.
For a project of approximately 3.7 m² (40 sq ft), the manufacturer recommends preparing two rollers for wet application and four additional rollers for dry-rolling to remove excess material.
PRO TIP: The cleaner and more evenly sanded the surface, the better the final result. Take the time to remove all dust, residue and loose fibres before beginning application.
Important: Do not use acetone for surface preparation or cleaning between coats. The manufacturer recommends 91% isopropyl alcohol, as acetone may interfere with adhesion.
Mixing Instructions
Ultimate Top Coat is mixed at a ratio of 2 parts A to 1 part B by volume, followed by the addition of room-temperature water. The water addition is different for each finish and must be measured carefully.
Textured Matte Finish
- Multiply the project area in square feet by 0.275 to determine the required amount of Ultimate Top Coat using the manufacturer’s mixing recipe.
- Multiply the calculated Ultimate Top Coat quantity by 0.16 to determine the required amount of room-temperature water.
- Measure Parts A and B at a 2:1 ratio by volume and mix thoroughly using a flat-bottomed mixing stick for 45–60 seconds.
- Add the calculated amount of room-temperature water and mix again until a uniform consistency is achieved.
Textured Gloss Finish
- Multiply the project area in square feet by 0.275 to determine the required amount of Ultimate Top Coat using the manufacturer’s mixing recipe.
- Multiply the calculated Ultimate Top Coat quantity by 0.5 to determine the required amount of room-temperature water.
- Measure Parts A and B at a 2:1 ratio by volume and mix thoroughly using a flat-bottomed mixing stick for 45–60 seconds.
- Add the calculated amount of room-temperature water and mix again until a uniform consistency is achieved.
IMPORTANT: Always mix Parts A and B thoroughly before adding water. Do not add water to either component individually. Refer to the Ultimate Top Coat Mixing Recipe under Technical Documents for detailed quantities and calculations.
Application Instructions
- Pour: Transfer the fully mixed Ultimate Top Coat and water mixture into a clean paint tray.
- Apply: Using a de-linted 1/4-inch nap microfibre roller, apply the coating evenly across the surface, working in manageable sections. Cover the entire surface and edges, maintaining a consistent application thickness.
- Blend: While the coating is still wet, gently feather out any raised roller marks or overlap lines to achieve an even finish.
- Dry-Roll: Switch to a clean, dry, de-linted roller and use light pressure to remove excess coating. When the roller begins to feel tacky or makes a sticky sound, replace it with a fresh dry roller.
- Allow to Cure: Leave the coated surface undisturbed while the material dries. Ultimate Top Coat will initially appear milky white but will become clear as it dries.
DO NOT SPRAY: Ultimate Top Coat is designed for roller application and should not be applied using spray equipment.
PRO TIP: Avoid excessive dry-rolling as the material begins to set. Once the approximately 15-minute working time has passed, continued rolling may pull at the coating and create unwanted peaks, stippling or texture variations. Faint roller overlap lines will generally become less visible as the coating dries.
Drying & Curing Times
- Working Time: Approximately 15 minutes
- Touch Dry: 8–10 hours
- Light Use: 36–48 hours
- Full Cure: 7 days
Allow the coating to cure fully before subjecting the surface to heavy use. Drying and curing times may vary depending on temperature, humidity and application conditions.
Care & Maintenance
Ultimate Top Coat is designed to withstand everyday use while maintaining its protective finish. Following the recommended cleaning and maintenance procedures will help preserve its appearance and performance.
- Everyday Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and dry with a clean towel.
- Stubborn Marks: Use a soft microfibre cloth with mild dish soap or a diluted all-purpose cleaner suitable for laminate surfaces.
- Heat Protection: Although Ultimate Top Coat offers excellent heat resistance, use trivets or heat pads beneath hot cookware and appliances to protect the finish.
- Scratch Prevention: Use cutting boards during food preparation and avoid dragging sharp or abrasive objects across the surface.
- Spills: Clean strongly coloured substances such as wine, mustard and turmeric promptly to minimise the risk of staining.
For heavily used surfaces, the manufacturer recommends considering refinishing after approximately 6–8 years, depending on the condition of the existing coating.
Shelf Life & Storage
Ultimate Top Coat has a manufacturer-stated shelf life of approximately 6 months when unopened. For best results, use the product promptly after opening.
Ensure containers are tightly sealed between uses and store in a cool, dark location. If using previously opened material, assess its condition and carry out a small test application before proceeding with a larger project.
Additional Information
For best results, we recommend practising the mixing and application process on a sample board before coating a finished countertop, kitchen or bathroom surface.
