Sculpt Nouveau Torch Patina
Find Your Perfect Patina with Sculpt Nouveau’s traditional metal patina range.
Sculpt Nouveau Torch Patina is a traditional cold-applied patina for bronze, brass, and copper, producing vibrant rainbow colours with variations of red, purple, and blue. It is commonly used by sculptors, metal artists, and decorative finishers seeking colourful, iridescent effects on non-ferrous metals.
Unlike traditional hot-applied rainbow patinas, Torch Patina is applied at room temperature without heating the metal. It can be applied directly to bronze, brass, and copper, or used in conjunction with Sculpt Nouveau Copper Plate Patina to create colourful finishes on iron and steel.
When applied, Torch Patina reacts gradually with the metal surface, initially developing red and purple tones. The reaction should be stopped by rinsing after approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute, with the blue colours becoming visible as the metal dries. Allowing the patina to react for too long may result in the loss of these blue tones.
On iron and steel, Torch Patina can be applied over Copper Plate Patina to achieve either an even or mottled finish, depending on the application method. It is not recommended for direct application to bare steel, as this will produce variations of black, grey, and rust rather than rainbow colours.
Directions & Application Notes
- Suitable for direct application to bronze, brass, and copper
- Can be used on iron and steel when first treated with Sculpt Nouveau Copper Plate Patina
- Apply cold at full strength using a brush, sponge, or sprayer
- Clean and degrease the metal before application, using a Scotch-Brite pad or light sanding where required
- Allow the patina to react for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute before rinsing with water
- Blue tones will develop as the metal dries; do not wait for them to appear before rinsing
- For iron and steel, apply over dried Copper Plate Patina for more even coverage, or while still wet for a mottled effect
- Not recommended for direct application to bare steel
- Approximate coverage: 4.8 m² per litre
As with all traditional patinas, results will vary based on surface preparation, metal composition, reaction time, and application method. Once completely dry, sealing with an appropriate protective topcoat is recommended to preserve the finished surface.
