Acetone Solvent
Acetone is a fast-evaporating solvent commonly used for cleaning tools and equipment used with polyester resins, fibreglass systems and MEKP catalyst. It is ideal for cleaning brushes, rollers, mixing containers, work benches and other equipment before materials have cured.
Acetone is also used to dissolve and thin certain special effects and prosthetic materials, including Neill’s Key-Cap Plastic Beads. By adding acetone to Key-Cap Plastic Beads and allowing them to dissolve, users can create liquid Key-Cap Plastic for bald caps and silicone prosthetic encapsulation.
Common Uses
- Cleaning polyester resin tools and equipment
- Removing uncured polyester resin residues
- Cleaning rollers, brushes and mixing containers
- Dissolving Neill’s Key-Cap Plastic Beads
- Thinning Key-Cap Plastic for brush or spray application
- General workshop cleaning and degreasing
Using Acetone with Key-Cap Plastic Beads
Acetone is the solvent required to convert Neill’s Key-Cap Plastic Beads into liquid Key-Cap Plastic. Simply add acetone to the bead container following the supplied instructions and allow the beads to fully dissolve. Once dissolved, the material can be used for bald caps, encapsulation and other prosthetic applications.
Important Information for Patina Applications
Acetone should not be used to prepare metal surfaces prior to applying patinas or metal coatings. Solvent residues can interfere with patina reactions and lead to inconsistent results.
For metal finishing applications, use a dedicated metal cleaner and degreaser such as Sculpt Nouveau Metal Cleaner & Degreaser to properly remove oils, contaminants and handling residue before applying patinas, metal coatings or sealers.
Safety Information
- Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
- Use only in well-ventilated areas.
- Keep away from heat, sparks and open flames.
- Avoid prolonged skin contact.
- Store in a cool, dry location away from ignition sources.
